Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART): A Creative Path Toward Change

If you’ve ever felt stuck with memories, emotions, habits, or reactions that just won’t seem to budge, no matter how much you talk about them, you’re not alone. Many people come to therapy knowing what happened or what they’d like to change, but still feel trapped by how it lives in their body and mind.

That’s where Accelerated Resolution Therapy can help.

What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy, often called ART, is an evidence-based, trauma-informed therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences in a way that feels safe, efficient, and empowering.

ART is rooted in neuroscience and commonly uses guided eye movements, similar to those that occur during REM sleep, to help the brain naturally reorganize how memories are stored. While the memory itself doesn’t disappear, the emotional charge attached to it often does. Besides eye movements, bilateral stimulation can also be provided in other ways, such as gentle handheld tappers, or alternating tones through headphones. These options serve the same purpose: engaging both sides of the brain, and can be especially helpful for clients who find eye movements uncomfortable or prefer a different sensory experience.

In simpler terms: ART helps your brain file painful experiences in a way that no longer feels overwhelming. You are reorganizing your mental filing cabinet.

How Is ART Different From Traditional Talk Therapy?

Traditional therapy often focuses on discussing experiences over time to gain insight and relief. ART can feel different because:

  • You don’t have to share every detail out loud

  • The process is structured and guided

  • Many clients notice change more quickly than expected

  • The focus is on resolution, not reliving

You remain fully awake, aware, and in control the entire time. Nothing is done to you; ART is something you actively participate in, at your own pace.

How ART Works at the Brain Level

At its core, ART works with how the brain stores experiences, and that’s something we all have in common, no matter what brings us to therapy. Every experience you’ve ever had is stored as a combination of:

  • Images

  • Sensations

  • Emotions

  • Beliefs about yourself or the world

When something feels unresolved, it’s often because the brain has stored it in a way that keeps triggering distress in the present. Even when you know you’re safe now, your body and emotions may not have caught up.

ART helps the brain reorganize these stored experiences so they no longer activate the same emotional or physical response. The memory remains, but it loses its power to hijack your nervous system.

Because this process applies to any experience that left a lasting imprint, ART can be used for a wide range of concerns.

What Happens in an ART Session?

During an ART session, your therapist will guide you through:

  1. Identifying the issue you’d like to work on

  2. Using bilateral stimulation while noticing thoughts, sensations, or images

  3. Allowing the brain to reprocess the experience naturally

  4. Replacing distressing imagery with more neutral or positive resolutions

Many people describe ART sessions as calm, focused, and surprisingly gentle, even when working with difficult material.

What Can ART Help With?

ART can be useful for both major life events and subtle, single or repeated experiences that slowly shape(d) your inner world. Below are some examples:

  • Trauma and PTSD (single-incident or complex)

  • Anxiety, panic, and chronic worry

  • Depression and emotional numbness

  • Grief and complicated loss

  • Phobias and specific fears

  • Relationship patterns and attachment wounds

  • Performance anxiety (work, sports, public speaking)

  • Medical, life transitions, or birth-related experiences

  • Stress, burnout, and nervous system overwhelm

  • Negative self-talk and limiting beliefs

  • Life transitions and identity shifts

Even concerns that don’t fit neatly into a diagnosis can be worked through with ART, especially when something just doesn’t feel resolved. You don’t need to have a “big trauma” to benefit. ART can also help with experiences that feel overwhelming, confusing, or emotionally unresolved.

Do I Have to Relive My Trauma?

This is one of the most common questions, and a big reason people are nervous about ART.

The short answer: No.

You do not have to retell your story in detail or relive it emotionally. ART allows the brain to process experiences without prolonged exposure or intense verbal recounting, which many clients find deeply relieving.

You also don’t need to know the “right” memory. Many people worry they won’t benefit from ART because they don’t know where their issue started. The good news is: you don’t have to. ART allows the brain to naturally connect to the experiences that matter most, even if you can’t consciously identify them. We follow your nervous system’s lead, rather than forcing insight or analysis. Sometimes the process works with clear memories; other times it works with sensations, emotions, or beliefs that don’t have a neat story attached. All of it is valid, and all of it can shift.

What Does ART Feel Like?

Clients often report feeling:

  • Lighter

  • Calmer

  • More grounded

  • Less reactive

  • More in control of their emotions

Some changes happen within a single session, while others unfold gradually as the brain continues integrating the work. After ART, clients often notice changes such as:

  • Reduced emotional intensity

  • Fewer triggers or negative stimulations

  • Increased sense peace or clarity

  • More compassionate self-talk

  • A feeling that something has “settled”

Change doesn’t mean erasing your past. It means your past no longer controls how you feel in the present.

Hear From Clients Who Have Experienced ART:

Fear of Driving

“I am pleasantly surprised how after 1 session of ART I know longer get triggered with fear when driving. I have a calmness I didn’t have before. It is so easy, I wish I had found out about it 30 years ago. I would have had a very different life.”

Addiction

“Addiction has been an issue in my family for several generations, particularly for the men. I started noticing nicotine pouches were causing me to have irregular heartbeats. When I decided to try to stop using nicotine pouches I realized it was probably one of the most addictive substances I had ever experienced. I could not enjoy a single second of my life without thinking of grabbing a can of nicotine pouches to curve the constant cravings. I had heard of ART and did not have much expectations going in, but what did I have to lose. Unbelievably to me I completed 2 sessions with Jenni and I have not used nicotine pouches since. I think of them every now and then, but the cravings completely went away! I have been nicotine free for well over a year and I know for a fact she helped my body and mind eliminate the cravings that had hindered me for such a long time and my health has improved since.”

Loss

“I have been able to sleep the night. I noticed when I was alone and it was quiet my mind always went to the moments of my loss. Now I don’t focus on that time. I tend to drift to better memories that bring a smile. I still cry over my loss, but it does not bring nightmares at night.”

Guilt

“I was extremely skeptical of ART but figured I had nothing to lose. After one session my feelings have changed dramatically. I am no longer sad, anxious or depressed about the situation that haunted me for months.”

OCD & Anxiety

“OCD and Anxiety are illnesses that I have lived with my entire life and things that I thought were a normal part of the human experience. It took me to get to the point of extreme depression to seek help, and that’s when my therapist recommended ART to me as a potential solution for my struggles. Simply put, I am convinced that ART is magic. I have done ART twice in my life, both at points when I was experiencing extreme depression and suicidal thoughts. Not only does it rid me of my depression, it also eases my anxiety and obsessive thought loops. ART gives me peace of mind, and the confidence that I can handle life’s most difficult moments.”

Codependency

“I am not so co-dependent. I’m relating to others differently - more sure, confident. I have definitely reclaimed a part of myself that was lost. I always felt that I was not enough. I feel so much more complete.”

Grief & Goal Setting

“I had problems dealing with my mom’s death and ART solved this problem. It took all my anxiety and sorrow away from me. I also am so focused and clear minded from this therapy that it helped me reach my goal of becoming an entrepreneur. The therapist directed me in finding my own answers in just one session. Now, I have a starting point to begin preparation for my business.”

Childhood Trauma

“At age 74, I am still haunted by Childhood abuse and it's affect on my ability to form healthy adult relationships. Recently, Accelerated Resolution Therapy has made it possible to end the extreme impact of a Childhood and an Adult Trauma Memory. I think to understand how the Therapy works, I would need to have a lot more knowledge of the human brain. But I am grateful and feeling well and at least presently not binge eating. I am diabetic so this is important.”
